内容摘要:This lecture discusses thethree pillars of a good empirical paper in applied economic research, with aparticular focus on the fields of insurance and real estate. As the first pillar,a good research question is fundamental to an empirical paper. Developing agood research question requires a keen eye on the big questions in the field, abroad knowledge of general economic issues, and the ability to extract economicprinciples from the empirical content. The second pillar is a convincing identification strategy. This lecture will devote much of the time to the discussion of the four state-of-the-art identification strategies in estimating casual effects: field experiments, instrumental variables estimation,differences-in-differences estimation, and regression discontinuity estimation.Lastly, I will touch on the third pillar—novel data, and go through a few emerging sources of data. By discussing the paper/dissertation writing process, this lecture will give the audience a taste of Ph.D. study in economic-relatedfields in the US, and debunk many popular myths in studying abroad.
